Tooth decay is the number one reason for hospital admissions among UK children aged 5–9, and yet — it’s entirely preventable. As a parent, the best thing you can do for your child’s oral health is start early and stay consistent.
What Causes Tooth Decay in Children?
Tooth decay happens when sugar combines with bacteria in the mouth, producing acid that attacks tooth enamel.
Common causes of decay in children include:
Frequent sugary snacks and drinks
Infrequent or incorrect brushing
Skipping dental check-ups
Start Brushing Early
Begin brushing as soon as the first baby tooth appears (usually around 6 months)
Brush twice daily – especially before bed
Supervise brushing until at least age 7
Spit, don’t rinse – rinsing washes away the fluoride
Limit Sugary Foods and Drinks
Sugar is the fuel for tooth decay — especially when consumed frequently throughout the day.
Keep sugary snacks to mealtimes only
Avoid fruit juices, fizzy drinks, and sweetened yoghurts
Offer milk or water between meals
Check labels — some baby snacks contain hidden sugars
Visit the Dentist Every 6 Months
Regular check-ups are key to preventing decay and spotting early problems
